Diagnostic or prognostic study

A microbiota pattern associated with cardiovascular events in secondary prevention: the CORDIOPREV study

Eur Heart JPublished

  • Prognostic study (secondary analysis of the CORDIOPREV clinical trial)

Authors' conclusion

These results reinforce the relationship between intestinal microbiota and CVD and suggest that a microbiota profile is associated with MACE in CHD patients, in addition to higher endotoxaemia.

Study context

Population
Patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) in the CORDIOPREV trial with available faecal samplestrial n = 1002
Participants
679 patients
Comparison
Gut microbiota of CHD patients with vs without new MACE over 7 years
  • MACEn = 132
Outcome
Baseline gut microbiota differences and a microbiota score associated with new MACE risk
Follow-up
7 years

Performance

As reported in the abstract

MACE incidence by intestinal microbiota risk score (10 bacterial taxa, random survival forest)

Hazard ratio

2.01

95% CI 1.37–3.22

Intestinal microbiota risk score vs No MACE
HR 2.01 (95% CI 1.37–3.22)
AUC, training set
65.2% (59.1%-71.3%)
AUC, validation set
68.6% (59.3%-77.9%)

Further findings

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) post-prandial fold change

Greater LPS post-prandial fold change in the MACE group
P = 0.005
