Cardiometabolic & kidneyCohort study
Accelerometer-Measured Sedentary Behavior, Future Disease, and Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health
- Cohort study (UK Biobank) with multivariable-adjusted Cox models
- accelerometer-measured sedentary time
- false discovery rate of 1%
- population-attributable fractions
Authors' conclusion
Excess sedentary behavior is broadly associated with future disease risk. Effects are prominent for CKM conditions, where population-level burden rivals consensus lifestyle factors. Avoiding excess sedentary behavior should be a key public health target.
Study context
- Population
- UK Biobank participants with accelerometer-measured sedentary timeindividuals undergoing accelerometry, age 63 ± 8 years, 56.3% women, median follow-up 8.0 years (quartile-1: 7.5, quartile-3: 8.5)
- Participants
- 89,537 participants
- Exposure
- Sedentary time in the top quartile vs the second quartile as referent
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
Incident diseases associated with sedentary time · median follow-up 8.0 years
Incident diseases associated with sedentary time at false discovery rate 1%
81/761 (10.6%)
Associations indicating higher disease risk with greater sedentary time
Seventy-five associations (92.6%)
Observational data: associations, not effects.
