Acute cardiac care & resuscitation
Blood-brain barrier permeability for the first 24 hours in hypoxic-ischemic brain injury following cardiac arrest
Authors' conclusion
BBB permeability increased progressively over time for the first 24 h after ROSC despite post-resuscitation care, whereas ICP did not change over time. BBB permeability has an individual pattern when stratified by injury severity.
Study context
- Population
- Patients with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury after cardiac arrest, first 24 h after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC)274 Qa, 197 intracranial pressure (ICP) measurements
- Participants
- 32 patients
- Exposure
- Pittsburgh Cardiac Arrest Category (PCAC) 2 vs PCAC 3 vs PCAC 4
- Outcome
- Time course of BBB permeability (albumin quotient, Qa) and ICP, and association with injury severity (PCAC scores 1-4)
- Follow-up
- Every 2 h for the first 24 h after ROSC
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
BBB permeability (Qa) and ICP over first 24 h after ROSC
PCAC 2
< 0.01
Observational data: associations, not effects.
