Catheter ablation of atrial tachyarrhythmias in patients with atrioventricular septal defect
- Observational cohort study
- multicentre
- six tertiary centres
Authors' conclusion
In patients with AVSD, most circuits involve the cavo-annular isthmus, but complex mechanisms are frequently encountered in patients with repeated procedures. The acute success rate is excellent, although recurrences remain common during follow-up.
Study context
- Population
- Patients with atrioventricular septal defect referred for catheter ablation of an atrial tachyarrhythmia, 2004–202287 tachyarrhythmias targeted
- Participants
- 56 patients
- Outcome
- Mechanisms of atrial tachyarrhythmias and outcomes after catheter ablation
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
- Cavo-annular isthmus-dependent IART
- 41 (73.2%) patients
- IART involving right lateral atriotomy
- 10 (17.9%) patients
- Other heterogeneous circuits (11 left-sided, 4 right-sided)
- 13 (23.2%) patients
- Acute success
- 54 (96.4%) patients
- ≥1 recurrence during mean follow-up 2.8 ± 3.8 years
- 22 (39.3%) patients
- Freedom from recurrence at 1 year
- 77.5%
Observational data: associations, not effects.

Repeated ablation procedures
- Underwent repeated ablation
- 15 (26.8%) patients
- Heterogeneous circuits incl. bi-atrial and left-sided tachyarrhythmias more frequent
