Childhood Screening for Familial Hypercholesterolemia: JACC Review Topic of the Week

J Am Coll CardiolPublished Narrative review

Authors' conclusion

Incorporating these concepts into existing evidence pathways allows the inclusion of surrogate clinical trial outcomes (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol reduction and atherosclerosis regression) and observational data on medication safety, strengthening the evidence for pediatric screening for FH.

Study context

Population
Children; screening for familial hypercholesterolemia (FH)
Outcome
Strength of evidence for pediatric FH screening

Main finding

As reported in the abstract

  • Incorporating FH as a tier 1 genetic condition and LDL-C as causal for atherosclerosis and CHD allows inclusion of surrogate trial outcomes (LDL-C reduction, atherosclerosis regression) and observational medication-safety data, strengthening the evidence for pediatric FH screening
