Coarctation of Aorta With Tricuspid Aortic Valve Is Not Associated With Ascending Aortic Aneurysm

J Am Coll CardiolPublished

  • Matched cohort study

Authors' conclusion

These findings suggest that BAV (and not COA) was associated with ascending thoracic aorta dimensions, and that patients with COA+TAV were not at a greater risk of developing ascending aortic aneurysms as compared with patients without SHD.

Study context

Population
Patients with coarctation of aorta, matched to patients with isolated bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) and without structural heart diseaseCoarctation of aorta (COA) 867 matched 1:1:1
Participants
304 / 563 / 867 / 867
Exposure
COA vs isolated BAV vs no structural heart disease
  • COA+BAVn = 304
  • COA+tricuspid aortic valve (TAV)n = 563
  • BAVn = 867
  • no-SHDn = 867reference
Outcome
Aortic dimensions (aortic root and mid ascending aorta diameter)
Follow-up
Baseline and 3, 5 and 7 years

Main finding

As reported in the abstract

Aortic diameters vs no-SHD

  • COA+BAV vs no-SHD: P < 0.001 — aortic root diameter
  • COA+BAV vs no-SHD: P = 0.008 — mid ascending aorta diameter
  • BAV vs no-SHD: P < 0.001 — aortic root diameter

Observational data: associations, not effects.

Safety
