Authors' conclusion
Multiple NCCs conferred poor in-hospital and post-discharge outcomes. Ejection fraction categories had different prevalence and risk profile associated with individual NCCs.
Study context
- Population
- Patients with acute HF across the ejection fraction (EF) spectrum, with complete information on 12 non-cardiac comorbidities (NCCs)
- Participants
- 9,326 patients
- Exposure
- Number and type of non-cardiac comorbidities across the EF spectrum
- Outcome
- Prevalence of NCCs and their associations with in-hospital and post-discharge outcomes
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
Prevalence by number of NCCs; in-hospital and post-discharge mortality
| Outcome | Values |
|---|---|
| Prevalence by number of NCCs; in-hospital and post-discharge mortality | 0 NCC 20.5% · 1 NCC 28.5% · In-hospital mortality 3.0% · Post-discharge mortality 18.5% · 2 NCC 23.1% · 3 NCC 15.4% · ≥4 NCC 12.5% · In-hospital mortality 12.5% · Post-discharge mortality 36% |
Observational data: associations, not effects.

Prevalence and post-discharge mortality by EF category
- Anaemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), peripheral vascular disease (PVD), sleep apnoea, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke/TIA, Parkinson and depression more prevalent in HF with preserved EF (HFpEF)
- Anaemia, kidney dysfunction, COPD and diabetes associated with post-discharge mortality in all EF categories; PVD, stroke/TIA and depression only in HFrEF; sleep apnoea and malignancy only in HFpEF
