Dose Response of Incidental Physical Activity Against Cardiovascular Events and Mortality
- Prospective cohort study
- device-assessed (accelerometry)
Authors' conclusion
Any daily IPA amount of vigorous or moderate intensity was associated with lower CVD risk in a dose-response manner. LIPA had weak associations with all outcomes. One minute of vigorous or ≈3.0 to 3.5 minutes of moderate IPA was associated with a similar degree of lower CVD risk.
Study context
- Population
- Nonexercisers from the 2013 to 2015 UK Biobank accelerometry substudy (56.2% women), mean age 61.9±7.6 years
- Participants
- 24,139 nonexercisers
- Exposure
- Incidental physical activity intensities and volume
- Outcome
- MACE (incident stroke, MI, HF, CVD death), CVD mortality and all-cause mortality
- Follow-up
- 7.9 years

- CVD mortality at median VIPA and MIPA durations — Any VIPA or MIPA associated with lower risk; plateau VIPA (min/d)
- ≈14
- CVD mortality at median VIPA and MIPA durations — Plateau MIPA (min/d)
- 34 to 50
LIPA
- Subtle inverse gradient, significant only for CVD mortality at >130 min/d
Health equivalence of 1 minute of VIPA
- Minutes of MIPA
