Drug-Coated Balloons for the Treatment of Coronary Artery Disease: A Review

JAMA CardiolPublished Narrative review

Authors' conclusion

Although commercially available in numerous countries now for more than a decade, DCB only recently obtained US Food and Drug Administration approval for the treatment of coronary ISR.

Study context

Population
Patients with coronary in-stent restenosis (ISR) or de novo CAD
Comparison
Drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty vs drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)

Main finding

As reported in the abstract

Advantages and indications of DCB angioplasty (narrative review)
  • DCBs offer advantages over DES, including preservation of vessel anatomy and function and positive vessel remodeling
  • Appealing for ISR, small-vessel disease, long lesions, simplification of bifurcation procedures, and diffuse distal disease after chronic total occlusion recanalization
  • Patients with high bleeding risk, DM and ACS might also benefit
