EEG-guided early cessation of sedation and targeted temperature management (TTM) in patients after cardiac arrest: a feasibility and safety study

ResuscitationPublished

  • non-randomised, controlled intervention study

Authors' conclusion

Early withdrawal of sedation is feasible and safe in patients with an early favourable EEG following cardiac arrest. The study was underpowered to detect possible differences in long-term neurological recovery.

Study context

Population
Adult patients admitted to the ICU with postanoxic encephalopathy after cardiac arrest and an early (<12 h) favourable EEG pattern
Participants
40 adult patients
Comparison
intervention group vs control group
Primary endpoint
Duration of mechanical ventilation

Primary result

As reported in the abstract

P < 0.001

Secondary outcomes

ICU length of stay · reduced by more than 50% in the intervention group

P = 0.001

Total sedation time · reduced by more than 50% in the intervention group

P < 0.001

Neurological outcomes · 3 or 6 months

No statistically significant differences in neurological outcomes at 3 or 6 months
