Authors' conclusion

Addition of empagliflozin to standard diuretic therapy may prevent the rise in SUA during decongestion in patients with ADHF and thus may prevent negative effects of hyperuricaemia including the occurrence of acute gout episodes.

Study context

Population
Patients with acute decompensated HF (acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF)), randomised within 12 h of admission, irrespective of LVEF or DM
Participants
60 patients
Comparison
Empagliflozin vs placebo added to standard medical treatment

Primary result

As reported in the abstract

Serum uric acid (SUA) · 3, 4 and 5 days
  • Serum uric acid (SUA) increased with placebo during diuretic therapy but decreased with empagliflozin
  • SUA significantly lower with empagliflozin vs placebo at 3, 4 and 5 days
  • SUA reduction with empagliflozin associated with enhanced renal uric acid excretion
