Authors' conclusion

Left ventricular structure is significantly increased following ET. Males, young and trained individuals, and ET interventions involving mixed training regimes elicit the greatest changes in LV structure.

Study context

Population
Healthy adults (>18 years) undergoing endurance training for ≥2 weeks
Participants
1,908 adults · 82 studies
Comparison
Pre- vs post-endurance training
Outcome
LV mass (LVM), septal (IVSd) and posterior wall thickness (PWTd) and LV diameter (LVDd) in diastole

Pooled result

As reported in the abstract

LV structure (LVM, PWTd, IVSd, LVDd) after endurance training (ET)
ETSMD (95% CI)P value
LVM
0.444(0.361–0.527)
P < 0.001
PWTd
0.234(0.159–0.309)
P < 0.001
IVSd
0.237(0.159–0.316)

LVDd
0.249(0.173–0.324)

Further pooled results

Mediators of LV mass (LVM) change (meta-regression)

Trained status, training type and age were the only mediators; greatest change in previously trained, mixed-type training, young (18-35 years) and middle-aged (36-55 years) vs untrained, interval-type training and older (>55 years)

Wall thickness and LVDd by sex

Significant increase in wall thickness in males; similar LVDd augmentation in males and females

Left ventricular (LV) structure by trained status and training modality

Trained individuals: increase in all LV structures; mixed-type training and rowing/swimming gave greatest increase in PWTd and LVDd
