Effects of exercise training on cardiac toxicity markers in women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy with anthracyclines: a randomized controlled trial

Eur J Prev CardiolPublished

  • Randomised controlled trial

Authors' conclusion

Exercise training was safe during chemotherapy and significantly improved cardiorespiratory fitness. No significant effects were seen on cardiac toxicity markers (LVEF or GLS) as compared to the usual care.

Study context

Population
Women with early-stage breast cancer receiving anthracycline-containing chemotherapy (4 cycles doxorubicin plus cyclophosphamide)
Participants
93 women
Comparison
Exercise vs usual care (UC)
  • Exercisen = 47
  • UCn = 46reference
Primary endpoint
Change in LVEF
Follow-up
Baseline to end of anthracycline cycles

Primary result

As reported in the abstract

end of AC

No significant between-group difference in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) change at end of AC

mean difference 0.7%; 95% CI −0.8, 2.3; P = 0.349

Secondary outcomes

Outcomedifference (mL O2·kg-1·min-1) (95% CI)P value
Estimated peak VO2 · end of AC1.6 (0.06–3.1)P = 0.041
Estimated peak VO2 · 3 months after AC3.1 (1.4–4.7)P < 0.001

Change in LVEF · 3 months after AC

No significant between-group difference in LVEF change 3 months after AC
1.1%; 95% CI −0.5, 2.6; P = 0.196

Global longitudinal strain (GLS), other echocardiographic parameters, NT-proBNP, hs-TnT

No between-group differences in the remaining secondary endpoints

Safety

Serious adverse events during supervised exercise training programme (SETP)

No serious adverse events observed during SETP
