Familial hypercholesterolaemia in children and adolescents: a European Atherosclerosis Society consensus statement
- Consensus statement
Recommendations
As issued by the authors
All countries are encouraged to establish a paediatric screening programme to increase familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) detection
Revised diagnostic criteria are presented, as current criteria often fail to identify children with an FH-causing genetic variant
Updated LDL-C treatment goals are proposed
Start lipid-lowering therapies before puberty in children with heterozygous FH (HeFH) and, if needed, from 6 years
Management guidance, including treatment algorithms for children with HeFH or homozygous FH (HoFH) and promotion of a smooth transition to adult care
