Fatal Cardiac Arrhythmias During Electronic Gaming in Patients With Genetically Mediated Heart Diseases
- Retrospective cohort study
- single-centre
Authors' conclusion
Although anecdotal cases of electronic gaming-associated life-threatening arrhythmias have been reported, in this largest single-center study to date, we show that these are extremely rare occurrences.
Study context
- Population
- Patients with genetic heart diseases evaluated at Mayo Clinic's genetic heart rhythm clinic, July 2000–November 2022
- Participants
- 3,370 patients
- Outcome
- Prevalence of cardiac events in the setting of electronic gaming
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
Cardiac event before diagnosis
1,079 (32%)
Electronic gaming-associated event before diagnosis (3 CPVT, 1 long QT syndrome, 1 premature ventricular contraction-triggered VF)
5 patients (0.5%)
≥1 breakthrough cardiac event after diagnosis and treatment
431 patients (13%)
Electronic gaming-associated breakthrough cardiac event (catecholamine-sensitive right outflow tract VT)
1 (0.2%)
Observational data: associations, not effects.
