Congenital heart diseaseCohort study
Fontan haemodynamics in adults with obesity compared with overweight and normal body mass index: a retrospective invasive exercise study
- Retrospective cohort study
- invasive exercise study
- single institution database
Authors' conclusion
Adults post-Fontan with obesity have worse aerobic capacity, increased Qs, higher filling pressures, and decreased arterial O2 saturation compared with those with overweight/normal BMI, both at rest and during exercise, mirroring the findings observed in the obesity phenotype of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
Study context
- Population
- Adults post-Fontan undergoing exercise cardiac catheterization (supine cycle protocol)
- Participants
- 77 participants
- Exposure
- Obesity vs overweight/normal body mass index (BMI)
- Obesityn = 18
- Overweight/normal BMIn = 59reference
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
Peak VO2 (non-invasive CPET), obesity vs overweight/normal BMI, mL/kg/min
15.6 ± 3.5 vs. 19.6 ± 5.8, P = 0.04
Exercise pulmonary artery (PA) pressure, obesity vs overweight/normal BMI, mmHg
29.7 ± 6.5 vs. 24.7 ± 6.8, P = 0.01
Exercise PA wedge pressure (PAWP), obesity vs overweight/normal BMI, mmHg
23.0 ± 6.5 vs. 19.8 ± 7.3, P = 0.047
Exercise arterial O2 saturation, obesity vs overweight/normal BMI
82.4 ± 7.0% vs. 89% (85; 92), P = 0.003
Observational data: associations, not effects.
