Lipoprotein (a) and incident coronary heart disease in the community: impact of traditional cardiovascular risk factors

Eur J Prev CardiolPublished

  • Pooled analysis of prospective population-based cohorts
  • 8 European cohorts
  • Fine and Gray competing risk-adjusted models

Authors' conclusion

Among CHD-free subjects, high Lp(a) was related to adverse outcome even in individuals with no or only one CVRF at baseline, thereby generating substantial challenges in mitigating Lp(a)-associated CHD risk in very low risk populations.

Study context

Population
Coronary heart disease (CHD)-free individuals from the general population, 8 European prospective cohorts
Participants
66,495 individuals · 8 cohorts
Comparison
Lp ≥90th pctl. vs <90th pctl., by CV risk factors (CVRF) burden
  • 0/1 CVRFn = 41,770
  • ≥2 CVRFsn = 24,725
Outcome
Incident CHD events by Lp(a) mass (≥90th vs <90th pctl.; cut-off 43.2 mg/dL)
Follow-up
Median 9.7 years

Pooled result
