Mode of Death in Patients With Heart Failure With Mildly Reduced or Preserved Ejection Fraction
- Secondary analysis of the FINEARTS-HF randomised trial
- prespecified
- Data analysis September 2024 to January 2025
Authors' conclusion
Among patients with HFmrEF/HFpEF in the FINEARTS-HF randomized clinical trial, higher proportions of cardiovascular and overall mortality in those with EF less than 50% were related principally to higher proportions of sudden death.
Study context
- Population
- Patients with HF and EF ≥40% (heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF)/heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)), by baseline EF category (<50%, ≥50-<60%, ≥60%)1,013 deaths
- Participants
- 6,001 patients
- Comparison
- Finerenone vs placebo
- Primary endpoint
- Mode of death, centrally adjudicated by a clinical end points committee
Primary result
As reported in the abstract
Mode of death among 1013 deaths · median follow-up 32 (23-36) months
- CV causes
- 502 (49.6%)
- Non-CV causes
- 368 (36.3%)
- Undetermined cause
- 143 (14.1%)
- Of CV deaths: sudden death
- 215 (42.8%)
- Of CV deaths: HF
- 163 (32.4%)
- Of CV deaths: stroke
- 48 (9.6%)
- Of CV deaths: MI
- 25 (5.0%)
- Of CV deaths: other CV causes
- 51 (10.2%)
Further findings
Death and cause-specific death, finerenone vs placebo, by EF category
- Finerenone did not significantly reduce death or cause-specific death vs placebo in any EF category
