Neurocognitive Function, Cerebral Blood Flow, and Hippocampal Volume After Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation

JACC Clin ElectrophysiolPublished

  • Patients undergoing atrial fibrillation (AF) catheter ablation were screened

Authors' conclusion

In this study, AF ablation did not significantly affect neurocognitive function at the 6-month follow-up. Compared with drug therapy, ablation was associated with greater changes in CBF and HV, and patients with CBF improvement, regardless of treatment assignment, showed improved performance in memory and new learning.

Study context

Population
Patients undergoing AF catheter ablation, with patients with AF managed by drug therapy as controlsaged 64 ± 11 years, 70% men, 41% with paroxysmal AF · ablation group 94 · control group 51
Participants
145 patients
Comparison
ablation vs control
  • ablationn = 94
  • controln = 51

Main finding

As reported in the abstract

Changes in neurocognitive function tests scores · 3 and 6 months after ablation
  • not significantly different between groups
