Prevention & lipidsCohort study
Physical activity and physical fitness in prediction of all-cause mortality and age at death in European extinct cohorts of middle-aged men followed for 60 years
- Prospective cohort study
- 60-year follow-up
- extinct cohorts
Authors' conclusion
Phyac and Fitscore are related, and both showed important predictive power for all-cause mortality and AD. The role of Fitscore was more powerful, and both characteristics seem to be expressions of health status.
Study context
- Population
- Middle-aged European men followed for 60 years until virtual extinction of cohorts
- Participants
- 5,482 men
- Exposure
- High vs low physical activity and physical fitness
- Outcome
- All-cause mortality and age at death (AD)
- Follow-up
- 60 years
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
All-cause mortality and AD (high vs low)
- Phyac high vs Phyac low · all-cause mortality; adjusted for 5 traditional CV risk factors
- HR 0.85
- Fitscore high vs Fitscore low · all-cause mortality; adjusted for 5 traditional CV risk factors
- HR 0.70
- Phyac · at death (AD); significant
- coefficient 2.25 years
- Fitscore · AD; significant
- coefficient 3.79
Observational data: associations, not effects.
Further findings
All-cause mortality by follow-up period · first and second 30-year periods
- Fitscore independently and significantly predictive in both periods
