Respiratory syncytial virus vaccination and risk of respiratory and cardiorespiratory hospitalization in adults with chronic kidney disease: a prespecified analysis of the DAN-RSV trial
- Prespecified analysis of the DAN-RSV randomised trial
- pragmatic
- open-label
- parallel-group
- individually randomized
- 1:1
- nationwide registry linkage
Authors' conclusion
In this analysis of the DAN-RSV trial, RSVpreF vaccination reduced RSV-related, broader respiratory and cardiorespiratory hospitalizations in older including those with CKD. No significant differences were observed for acute kidney outcomes.
Study context
- Population
- Adults aged ≥60 years with and without chronic kidney disease (CKD), 2024/2513,364 (10.2%) with CKD
- Participants
- 131,276 adults
- Comparison
- Respiratory syncytial virus prefusion F (RSVpreF) vs no vaccine, in adults with and without CKD
- RSVpreFn = 65,642
- No vaccinen = 65,634reference
- Primary endpoint
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related respiratory tract disease hospitalization
- Follow-up
- 14 days post-randomization to 31 May 2025
Primary result
As reported in the abstract
RSV-related respiratory tract disease hospitalization, by CKD status
VE
- CKD
- 66.4% (95% CI −85.2 to 96.7%)
- no CKD
- 91.7% (95% CI 43.7 to99.8%)
Secondary outcomes
| Outcome | VE (95% CI) |
|---|---|
| RSV-related respiratory tract disease hospitalization, overall · overall | 83.3% (42.9–96.9%) |
Cardiorespiratory hospitalization
- Reduced with RSVpreF irrespective of CKD status
Acute kidney outcomes
- No significant differences
Mortality (CKD)
- Numerical imbalance in mortality among participants with CKD; event numbers limited
