Recommendations

As issued by the authors

  1. Optimise right ventricular (RV) function in every patient before left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation; diuretics, inotropes and even temporary mechanical circulatory support may improve RV function

  2. Meticulous perioperative and immediate postoperative management to identify RV failure refractory to medication

  3. Careful monitoring of RV function throughout the entire follow-up, as late right heart failure (RHF) during chronic LVAD support is associated with worse long-term outcomes

  4. Right heart catheterization frequently offers additional support for assessment and optimization of RV function beyond echocardiography

  5. In any LVAD candidate, assess and treat RV function and failure in a multidimensional and multidisciplinary manner
