Eur J Prev CardiolPublished

  • Expert opinion review of hypertension guidelines

Recommendations

As issued by the authors

  1. Basic cardiac and renal hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) assessment in all patients: ECG, serum creatinine, eGFR, and albumin-creatinine ratio in a morning spot-urine

  2. Advanced tests depending on initial findings, likelihood of changing management, and local availability and resources

  3. Echocardiography remains the preferred initial test and may add prognostic information in most patients

  4. Premature atherosclerosis by ultrasound or CAC score, or arterial stiffness by pulse wave velocity, may be indicated in young and middle-aged individuals with hypertension or BP close to treatment threshold, if likely to change management
