Heart failure & cardiomyopathiesCohort study
Survival Outcomes in Middle-Aged and Older Patients With Advanced Heart Failure
- Retrospective cohort study
- propensity-score matched
Authors' conclusion
The 2-year survival was higher post-HT compared with HM3 use; however, when including pre-HT waitlist time, HM3 therapy demonstrated higher survival than survival free from delisting resulting from deterioration in HT candidates.
Study context
- Population
- Middle-aged (50–64 years) and older (≥65 years) adults with advanced heart failure (HF), 2014 to 2018matched cohort
- Participants
- 1,763 vs 5,336
- Exposure
- HM3 LVAD vs heart transplantation (HT)
- HM3n = 1,763
- HTn = 5,336reference
- Outcome
- Survival from treatment or listing
- Follow-up
- 2 years
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
2-year survival from treatment
- middle-aged: 90.7% vs 83.8%
- HR 1.76; P = 0.0004
- older: 87.5% vs 77.7%
- HR 1.89; P < 0.0001
Observational data: associations, not effects.
Further findings
2-year survival including waitlist period (HT: survival free from delisting due to deterioration) · middle-aged
HR 0.62 · P < 0.0001
2-year survival including waitlist period (HT: survival free from delisting due to deterioration) · older
HR 0.81 · P = 0.064
