The alveolar–capillary unit in the physiopathological conditions of heart failure: identification of a potential marker
- Narrative review
Authors' conclusion
Thus, to the list of the potential proposed markers of HF, we add proSP-B, which represents a precise marker of alveolar-capillary membrane dysfunction in HF, correlates with prognosis, and represents a precocious marker of drug therapy.
Study context
- Population
- Patients with heart failure (HF) (alveolar-capillary membrane)
Main finding
As reported in the abstract
Circulating proSP-B as a marker of alveolar-capillary membrane integrity in HF
- Circulating immature proSP-B reflects alterations in alveolar-capillary membrane integrity
- proSP-B binds HDL, impairing its antioxidant activity
- Immature proSP-B, not mature protein, relates to lung abnormalities more precisely than lung function parameters
- proSP-B correlates with prognosis and is a precocious marker of drug therapy
