Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) in Medicare Advantage and Medicare Fee-for-Service: Differences in Patient Characteristics, Utilization, and Outcomes

Circ Popul Health OutcomesPublished

Authors' conclusion

Despite similar clinical profiles and TAVR utilization, MA patients appeared to experience better 30-day and 1-year outcomes than FFS patients. Differences in care delivery may contribute, but future studies are needed to understand differences in outcomes.

Study context

Population
Medicare patients who underwent TAVR from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2022patients undergoing TAVR (64.4% fee-for-service (FFS), 35.6% Medicare Advantage (MA))
Participants
317,630 patients
Exposure
MA versus FFS enrollment

Main finding

As reported in the abstract

TAVR utilization rate · by the end of the study

Observational data: associations, not effects.

Further findings

Black race · MA patients more likely to be Black

SMD −11.9

Dual-enrolled in Medicaid · MA patients more likely to be dual-enrolled

SMD −16.3
