Authors' conclusion

In this large international prospective survey among patients with severe left-sided VHD, moderate/severe TR was frequent in patients with mitral valve disease and was associated with a poorer outcome as TR grade increased. In patients with severe TR, compliance to guidelines for class I indications for concomitant TV surgery at the time of left-sided heart valve surgery was very good.

Study context

Population
Patients with severe native left-sided valvular heart disease (VHD) or previous left-sided valvular intervention, Europe
Participants
6,883 patients
Outcome
TR frequency, management and outcome

Main finding

As reported in the abstract

Moderate or severe TR frequency
Increasing tricuspid regurgitation (TR) grade associated with more severe clinical presentation and poorer 6-month survival
P < 0.0001

Observational data: associations, not effects.

Further findings

Concomitant TV intervention at mitral valve surgery

Concordance of guideline class I indications (severe TR) for concomitant tricuspid valve (TV) surgery with real-practice decisions

Overall
88%
Operated on for MR
95%
