Associations of Left Atrial Dimension and Ventricular Mass With Long-Term Health Outcomes

JACC AdvPublished

Authors' conclusion

In our large community-based sample, we observed associations of LASD and LVM with risk of multiple health outcomes over long-term follow-up. These findings underscore the importance of maintaining optimal LASD and LVM values over the life course.

Study context

Population
Framingham participants with echocardiography-derived LASD and left ventricular mass (LVM), observations collected 1991 to 2008mean age 48 ± 13 years, 54.3% women
Participants
8,192 participants
Comparison
Associations of echocardiography-derived LASD and LVM with risk of mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD), dementia, hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease

Further findings

OutcomeHR (per-SD increase) (95% CI)
HF with preserved ejection fraction — Higher LASD1.39 (1.06–1.84)
HF with preserved ejection fraction — Higher LVM1.37 (1.08–1.74)

All outcomes (LASD and LVM modeled separately)

Higher LASD and LVM associated with higher risk of all outcomes, except for coronary heart disease
