Non-modifiable cardiovascular risk factors and coronary plaque characteristics in patients with acute coronary syndromes

Eur Heart J Cardiovasc ImagingPublished Patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) were divided into four groups based on the number of non-modifiable risk factors (NMRFs)

Authors' conclusion

In patients with ACS, the burden of NMRFs was not correlated with OCT-defined plaque vulnerability or the prevalence of plaque rupture, both at culprit and non-culprit lesions. Conversely, a higher number of NMRF was linked to a greater probability of calcified plaque and a lower probability of plaque erosion.

Study context

Population
Patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), coronary plaque characteristics defined by optical coherence tomography (OCT)plaques analysed · culprit plaques 1,663 · non-culprit plaques 682
Participants
2,345 patients
Comparison
correlate the number of NMRFs with coronary plaque characteristics defined by optical coherence tomography (OCT)

Main finding

As reported in the abstract

OCT-defined vulnerable features and plaque rupture in culprit plaques

P-trend for each vulnerable feature

> 0.05

P-trend for plaque rupture

0.856

Further findings

Calcified plaque

ComparisonOR (95% CI)P value
Number of NMRF · directly correlated2.60 (2.01–3.37)P < 0.001

Erosion

ComparisonOR (95% CI)P value
Number of NMRF · inversely correlated0.72 (0.61–0.84)P < 0.001

Vulnerable features in non-culprit plaques

No association between the number of NMRFs and vulnerable features
