The cold temperature associated with new-onset heart failure after incorporating dynamic status of multimorbidity: nationwide cohort, Taiwan 2012–2019

Eur J Prev CardiolPublished

  • Nationwide cohort study

Authors' conclusion

Cold temperatures are associated with an increased risk of new-onset HF. Stratum 2 (aged 60-69 with 2-3 comorbidities or aged 70+ with 1-2 comorbidities) are particularly susceptible to cold-related new-onset HF.

Main finding

As reported in the abstract

New-onset HF vs ambient temperature, by risk stratum

Heart failure (HF) incidence rate, Strata 1, 2, 3 (per 100 000 person-years)

25.54, 555.27, 2315.52

Slope of HF risk as temperature decreases, Strata 1, 2, 3

1.032, 1.040, 1.034

Rate ratio of HF, winter median 17°C vs summer median 29°C, Strata 1, 2, 3

1.45, 1.58, 1.49

R2 of Poisson regression (3 risk strata + daily minimum temperature) on ln HF incidence rates

77.99%

Observational data: associations, not effects.
